The EDGE/100 Fellows teambuilding event at Mt. Lebanon was so much fun! We had to travel on two school buses to get to our camp destination in Cedar Hill, Texas. Once there, students and volunteers were engaged in ice breaker games and relay races that really got everyone's adrenaline flowing.
Next, our volunteer speaker, State Farm Agent Lyndon Taylor, gave the students helpful insite into the importance of goal setting and following through on their goals. He "kept it real."The students really benefited from his sincere concern for their future. They were able to practically apply the "pep talk" by completing their own Individual Development Plans (IDPs) - setting goals for academic, career and social development. Each student who completed the IDP will now be assigned a mentor to help them chart a course to attaining their respective goals within the EDGE program year.
During lunch, we were all delighted by one team's impromptu skit performance of their rendition of a student transitioning from high school to college. Although we couldn't quite follow the story line, it was funny seeing them perform in wigs and costuming.
Climaxing our day was the encounter with the ever intimidating 4 story ZIP TOWER! All approached the tower. Many climbed the tower (and came right back down). Few jumped off the tower to leave their fate in the hands of a secure harness to race down the zip line. After the ZIP TOWER experience, it was discovered that many EDGE students, AND VOLUNTEERS, still have a ways to go to overcome their fears. We'll try it again next year.
